What is an EEG?

An electroencephalogram (EEG) is a non-invasive test that records electrical activity in your brain. Small sensors (electrodes) are placed on your scalp to detect electrical signals produced by brain cells.

EEGs are commonly used to diagnose and monitor conditions such as epilepsy, seizures, sleep disorders, and other neurological conditions.

How to Prepare

Before Your Appointment:

  • Wash your hair the night before or morning of your test (no conditioner, oils, or styling products)
  • Avoid caffeine for 8 hours before the test (unless instructed otherwise)
  • Take your regular medications unless your doctor tells you otherwise
  • Eat normally before your test
  • Bring a list of your current medications

Ambulatory In-Home EEG

We're proud to be the first and only provider of ambulatory in-home video EEG studies in Alaska. This service is available in the Anchorage Bowl, Mat-Su Valley, and Fairbanks.

With ambulatory EEG, you can be monitored in the comfort of your own home while going about your daily activities. A portable device records your brain activity over an extended period (typically 24-72 hours).

Long-term monitoring (LTM) studies are done in the comforts of your home or hotel without having to be admitted to the hospital.

This option is especially beneficial for families in remote areas who would otherwise need to travel long distances for extended monitoring.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does an EEG take?

A routine EEG typically takes 60-90 minutes. Long-term monitoring can range from several hours to several days, depending on what your doctor is looking for.

Is an EEG painful?

No, an EEG is completely painless. The electrodes simply detect electrical signals from your brain—they don't send any electricity into your body.

Will I get my results immediately?

Your EEG will be interpreted by our board-certified epileptologist, and a comprehensive report will be sent to your referring provider. Your doctor will discuss the results with you at your follow-up appointment.

Can I have an EEG if I have hair extensions or braids?

Please contact us before your appointment. Hair extensions, braids, and weaves may need to be removed or adjusted for proper electrode placement.

Do you accept insurance?

We work with most major insurance providers. Please contact our office at 907-331-4106 to verify your coverage.
